Walk in off, man, just walk it off...

For anyone who's ever tweaked an ankle while playing sport, especially if you're a "man," these words are a common phrase.  However, in this case, I'm not injured, at least not yet anyway.

While in Moscow (with a weekend trip to St. Petersburg), the main mode of transportation will be my own two feet.  Now, I've never really minded walking places.  In fact, right now, I live just a block and a half away from the school that I teach at and just four block from downtown Lexington so I walk most days to school and will also often walk downtown for dinner.  Also, in my final year at Greenville, I lived off campus and walked everywhere (including the one mile stretch to the Factory Theater) and loved it because I actually lost weight that year.

In Moscow, however, we won't just be walking...I'll be WALKING, as in 10-15 miles a day kind of walking.  You know, no thing big or anything. It's only like walking from Spring Arbor to downtown Jackson. Now, for those of you who aren't from Spring Arbor, it would be like walking from Greenville to Pochie, downtown Detroit to Ferndale (down Woodward of course), or from Transy to the Fayette Mall and back.  I hope that gives you a good idea about the distance.

So, in preparation for all this walking, I'm setting out to try to walk more everyday to start building up and stretching out my leg muscles.  I'll be doing this by trying to take a three-five mile walk every evening.  Also, since I'll often be carrying around art supplies, I'll be wearing my backpack with my laptop and several books in it to add a little to the authenticity of the experience.  Thankfully, there are plenty of great places to walk around Lexington.  Mostly, I think I'll just be heading south and walking down to UK and back seeing how I haven't been down there much this year.

Until next time...keep walking it off...
